History

The exact historical origin of Guruvayur Temple is unknown, but historians believe the temple is many centuries old and became an important Vaishnavite centre during the medieval period. The temple gained widespread fame during the 16th century after the composition of Narayaneeyam by Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri. During different periods of history, the temple faced invasions and threats. In the 18th century, during the invasions of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, the temple idol was secretly moved to safe locations to protect it from destruction. After peace was restored, the idol was ceremonially reinstalled at Guruvayur. A major fire accident occurred in 1970 during the annual festival, causing severe damage to parts of the temple complex. However, the sanctum sanctorum and the main idol remained unharmed, which devotees considered a divine miracle. The temple was later reconstructed carefully while preserving the traditional Kerala temple architectural style. Today, the temple is managed by the Guruvayur Devaswom and continues to be one of the most visited and spiritually significant temples in India.

Remarks

Guruvayur Temple is one of the busiest pilgrimage centres in South India and is deeply respected among Vaishnavite devotees. The temple follows very strict traditional customs and only Hindus are permitted inside the temple premises. Devotees must follow a traditional dress code while entering the temple. Men usually wear mundu or dhoti without shirts, while women wear sarees or other traditional attire. The temple is famous for rituals and offerings such as Tulabharam, Choroonu (first rice-feeding ceremony for children), Palpayasam, Krishna Archana, and marriage blessings. Guruvayur is also closely connected with elephants, especially through the famous Punnathur Kotta elephant sanctuary. The legendary elephant Guruvayur Kesavan is remembered with great devotion and respect by devotees even today. Important festivals celebrated here include Guruvayur Ekadasi, Ashtami Rohini (Krishna Janmashtami), annual Utsavam, Vishu, and Chembai Sangeetholsavam, a renowned classical music festival held in memory of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar

Story

According to temple legends, the idol worshipped at Guruvayur is extremely ancient and sacred. It is believed that Lord Vishnu gave this idol to Lord Brahma for worship. Later, the idol came into the possession of Lord Krishna at Dwaraka. After Lord Krishna departed from Earth and Dwaraka was about to be submerged into the sea, Guru Brihaspati (the teacher of the Devas) and Vayu (the wind god) were instructed to rescue the idol and find a holy place for consecration. They travelled across Bharata and finally reached Kerala, where they met Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi performing meditation. Shiva advised them to install the idol there and blessed the place. Since the idol was installed by Guru and Vayu, the place became known as β€œGuru-Vayu-oor,” which later became Guruvayur. Another famous story connected to the temple is about Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, who suffered from severe rheumatism after taking on the illness of his guru. Staying at Guruvayur, he composed the devotional masterpiece Narayaneeyam over 100 days. On completing the final verse, Lord Guruvayurappan is believed to have appeared before him and cured his illness. The temple is also associated with the saint Poonthanam Namboodiri, whose pure devotion became a symbol of true bhakti beyond scholarly knowledge.
