Story
According to legend, Sage Parashurama sought redemption after destroying many Kshatriya clans. While praying to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva appeared before him at Vilwadri and handed him a divine idol of Vishnu, instructing him to consecrate it at a sacred location for the salvation of wandering souls. Around the same time, Sage Amalaka was performing severe penance to please Lord Vishnu. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before the sage along with Sri Devi and Bhumi Devi under the protection of Adisesha and agreed to remain there permanently as a self-manifested idol for the welfare of humanity. Later, an Asura disguised as a Brahmin entered the temple region and caused destruction by killing cows and Brahmins. On an Ekadasi night, the demon entered the sanctum intending to destroy the deity. At that moment, Lord Vishnu emerged from a pillar in the fierce Narasimha form and killed the Asura just like Hiranyakashipu. After calming down, the Lord blessed the devotees and remained there with a combined presence of Vishnu and Shiva, giving rise to the concept of Shankaranarayana worship at the temple.
