History

The temple has a very ancient origin and is deeply associated with Keralaโ€™s spiritual and cultural history. Traditionally, the administration of the temple was handled by five Brahmin Moosad families known as โ€œParasudayavar,โ€ who were believed to have received authority directly from Parashurama. Historical records mention that the temple later came under the control of the Chera rulers, followed by the Zamorins of Kozhikode and eventually the Kings of Kochi. The temple suffered major fire accidents several times during the 19th century, particularly in 1827 and twice again in 1861. Although large parts of the temple structure were destroyed, the sacred idols miraculously remained unharmed. The present temple complex was rebuilt in 1883 under the patronage of the King of Kochi in traditional Kerala architectural style. Today, the temple is managed by the Cochin Devaswom Board and continues to attract thousands of devotees and pilgrims every year

Remarks

The temple is renowned for its twin sanctums dedicated to Lord Rama and Lord Lakshmana, both receiving equal importance in worship. The western sanctum houses a rare Swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of Lord Rama made of Pathalanjana Sila, while the eastern sanctum is dedicated to Lord Lakshmana, which is extremely rare in India. The temple stands about 100 feet above sea level and offers a beautiful view of Bharathappuzha River. The sacred Punarjani Cave near the temple is believed to grant spiritual rebirth and is opened to devotees only once a year during Guruvayoor Ekadasi. The temple is also famous for strict traditional customs, ancient rituals, seeveli processions, and its spiritual connection with Lord Narasimha and Parashurama.

Story

According to legend, Sage Parashurama sought redemption after destroying many Kshatriya clans. While praying to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva appeared before him at Vilwadri and handed him a divine idol of Vishnu, instructing him to consecrate it at a sacred location for the salvation of wandering souls. Around the same time, Sage Amalaka was performing severe penance to please Lord Vishnu. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before the sage along with Sri Devi and Bhumi Devi under the protection of Adisesha and agreed to remain there permanently as a self-manifested idol for the welfare of humanity. Later, an Asura disguised as a Brahmin entered the temple region and caused destruction by killing cows and Brahmins. On an Ekadasi night, the demon entered the sanctum intending to destroy the deity. At that moment, Lord Vishnu emerged from a pillar in the fierce Narasimha form and killed the Asura just like Hiranyakashipu. After calming down, the Lord blessed the devotees and remained there with a combined presence of Vishnu and Shiva, giving rise to the concept of Shankaranarayana worship at the temple.
